Understanding how to calculate the marks you need to pass can take the stress out of exam preparation and help you study more strategically. Whether you're aiming for a distinction or just want to make sure you pass, knowing exactly what you need gives you a clear goal to work towards.

Understanding Weighted Averages

Most university courses use weighted averages to calculate your final mark. This means not all assessments count equally – an exam worth 60% of your grade matters more than an assignment worth 10%.

The basic formula is simple:

Final Mark = (Assessment 1 Mark × Weight 1) + (Assessment 2 Mark × Weight 2) + ...

How to Calculate What You Need

Let's say you have a module with:

  • Assignment 1 (20%): You got 65%
  • Assignment 2 (20%): You got 58%
  • Final Exam (60%): Still to write

If you need 50% to pass, here's how to work it out:

  1. Calculate what you've already earned: (65 × 0.20) + (58 × 0.20) = 13 + 11.6 = 24.6%
  2. Subtract from your target: 50 - 24.6 = 25.4%
  3. Divide by remaining weight: 25.4 ÷ 0.60 = 42.3%

So you need at least 42.3% in your exam to pass the module!

Using HowManyMarks

Of course, you don't need to do these calculations by hand. Our free calculator does all the maths for you instantly. Just enter your completed assessments and target mark, and we'll tell you exactly what you need.

Tips for Success

  • Know your subminimums: Some modules require you to pass specific components (like the exam) separately. Make sure you know these requirements.
  • Aim higher: Don't just aim for exactly what you need. Give yourself a buffer in case the exam is harder than expected.
  • Prioritise wisely: If you need 80% in one exam and 40% in another, focus your study time accordingly.
